Why are Cuban Cigars Illegal?
Why are Cuban Cigars Illegal you may ask?
It is illegal to import Cuban Cigars into the
United States because of the Cold War!
Back in the late 1950s, the United States limited Cuban
imports to the United States in response to Cuba's
new government, which seized United States properties
in Cuba.
Then, in the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War,
the trade restrictions were further limited, because of
Cuba's alliance with the Soviet Union.
Finally, in February 1962, importing Cuban Cigars from Cuba to the
United States became completely illegal. Interestingly,
we heard rumors that President John F. Kennedy went on
a Cuban Cigar-shopping spree to stock up on his favorite
Cuban Cigars, before announcing the embargo making
Cuban Cigars illegal in the United States.
The restrictions and limitations have been updated over
the years, and although the Cold War is long over, Cuban
Cigars are still illegal, because of Cuba's Human Rights
policies.
