(Portland, Or.) — Governor Kitzhaber today issued a call to action for all Oregonians to join him to move the state toward future prosperity. The Governor announced his vision for transforming state government to spur job creation, restructure the education system and improve health care delivery in Oregon, during a City Club of Portland address.
Governor Kitzhaber outlined specific progress on job creation including the latest multi-million dollar capital investment in advanced manufacturing in Oregon. Shimadzu U.S. A. Manufacturing will expand its Canby, Oregon facility producing analytical instrumentation for high tech industries.
“Oregon is open for business, and new investment across Oregon this year is more evidence the recovery is underway,” said Governor Kitzhaber.
The Governor called for Oregonians to commence what he called “a new growth curve,” with new approaches to achieve the state’s objectives for economic growth, education and health care, including:
· A “Cool Schools” initiative creating jobs upgrading Oregon school buildings to improve energy efficiency and environmental performance.
· Strategic investments in proven job creation programs – targeting innovation and workforce development.
· Legislation to create an integrated and accountable 0-20 education system from early childhood success through K-12 and post-secondary education and training.
· Restructuring early childhood services to create a more streamlined, accountable system to ensure children enter school ready and able to learn.
· Legislation to reform Oregon’s health care delivery system to improve public health; improve the quality of care; and reduce the cost of care.
“I believe that embedded in the challenges we face lies an unprecedented set of opportunities – but to realize those opportunities we must change,” said Governor Kitzhaber. “We must change ourselves and we must change our assumptions in order to change our future.”
